Bulletin of the Rhode Island School of Design

Bulletin of The Rhode Island School of Design

The Bulletin of the Rhode Island School of Design began publication with the January 1913 issue for the purpose of spreading “knowledge about the activities of the institution and the advance of art in the state.” The eight page Bulletin, edited by RISD Director L. Earle Rowe (1912-1937), contained short essays by Rowe  on works of art held by the Museum of Art, information on exhibits, accessions, and loans, as well as brief notices on the School, the Library, corporate officers, publications, and Museum admissions policies. Over time the Bulletin expanded to 16+ pages as the essays increased in length and number. Curator Miriam Banks, Museum Assistant Caroline M. Morton, and others contributed essays.

Museum Director Alexander Dorner (1938-1941) transformed the publication into the Bulletin of the Museum of Art, RISD.  Publishing three issues a year, Dorner expanded the Bulletin  to 30+ pages devoting each issue to a single subject with extensive illustrations. The Bulletin  did not survive Dorner’s departure in 1941. The Museum Notes,  a four-page newsletter published monthly during the academic year at first then quarterly, debuted in January 1943. Primarily a schedule of events, the newsletter slowly added short essays in keeping with the original Bulletin,  but never expanded beyond four pages.

RISD revived the Bulletin of Rhode Island School of Design  in 1955 publishing four issues a year. (The Rhode Island School of Design became simply Rhode Island School of Design during the 1930s.) The Catalog of Degree Programs was issue #1 followed by three issues of Museum Notes. Published in booklet form of varying lengths (20-50+ pages), Museum Notes reflected the Dorner period with longer heavily illustrated essays. A stable publication schedule prevailed until 1971.

The Bulletin  was expanded to include the Alumni Edition, first published as the Alumni Bulletin (1944-1971), and the President’s Reports. Museum Notes was reduced first to two issues then one issue a year. The Museum’s Selection  publications, a series devoted to different areas of the collections, comprised seven of nine issues between 1971 and 1977. The Museum published one issue of Museum Notes a year from 1978 to 1991. During that period the Bulletin  became simply Rhode Island School of Design  (1983) and was used to publish special issues, the annual financial report, Alumninews, and Continuing Education catalogues. Since 1992 the RISD has been used exclusively to publish course catalogues except for one issue of Museum Notes in 1996 and four issues of RISD Views.
