The word lithography is from the Greek word litho meaning stone and graphy which refers to writing. "The print is pulled from an image created on the flat surface of a stone plate. There is no need for either incision or relief on the working surface, as the principle of the technique relies on the fact that grease and water do not mix." The Printmaking Bible (p. 252)
