Through a generous gift from Anne (MFA 92), Michael, and Amelia Spalter, Fleet Library is building a world-class research and reference collection for the study of the foundational period of computer, algorithmic and generative art, 1965-2000. The family's name can be seen elsewhere on campus: Michael formerly chaired the Board of Trustees, and the Spalter New Media Gallery is a central fixture of the RISD Museum. Anne Morgan Spalter is a RISD alumna, digital mixed-media artist and author of the influential textbook The Computer in the Visual Arts. Together, the family stewards Spalter Digital, one of the world’s largest private collections of computer art from the second half of the twentieth century to present day. The collection focuses primarily on plotter drawings, includes other 2D media as well as sculpture and 16mm film and contains major and iconic examples from key artists in the field.
