Policies and Procedures

USING AN IMAGE

Digital Images are produced and licensed for teaching, study, and learning by RISD faculty, staff, and students. These educational uses are largely covered by the Fair Use clause of the U.S. Copyright Act. Other uses, especially non-educational uses, may not be covered. Read more about Fair Use via these respected sources: Columbia University (authored by Dr. Kenneth D. Crews), Stanford University Copyright and Fair Use Center, and Center for Media and Social Impact, including the Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for the Visual Arts.

CITING AN IMAGE

IMAGE SERVICES

Faculty may request images to be scanned for teaching and course development needs. Bring the source material (book, journal, print, postcard, photograph, slides etc.) to room 204 on the second floor of the library with the images clearly selected along with any special instructions. We are able to scan circulating and non-circulating items from the main library, Archives, or Special Collections.

In general, please allow 1 to 2 weeks to process an order of 50 images (smaller quantities will take less time and larger orders, more). Scanned image files will be provided via Dropbox or some similar electronic means. It is the goal of the Visual Resource Center to catalog every scanned image for the RISD community; thus, images will be added to the RISD Digital Image Collection accessible via JSTOR. Sources without any data from which to catalog will not be scanned.
