Generative Artificial Intelligence

An overview for students and faculty

When to Use Text and Image Generators

It is important to understand what text and image generators can and cannot do before relying on them to write your next paper or create your next work of art. Most of the advice below is geared towards text-producing generative AI (i.e. chatbots), but some may apply to image-producing software as well.

You should NOT use text/image generators to:

  • Complete an assignment for class without consulting your instructor. Many professors include language about using generative AI in their syllabus, but if you have any questions or doubts, it's best to talk to your professor sooner rather than later.
  • Locate sources for your assignment. Many chatbots are known to produce fabricated sources, known as "hallucinations," when users ask them for books, journal articles, etc. on a topic. Some will even respond that they cannot provide a source for their information. If a chatbot cites a source, be sure to double check it using Fleet Search or another academic search tool.
  • Conduct serious scholarly research. Because we do not always know what sources go into chatbots' training, we should assume that there are many copyrighted and/or scholarly resources that are excluded. While chatbots might be able to produce arguments of great depth and detail, this output may not factor in critical or recent works on your topic. Serious scholarship requires intensive and iterative research, often using library resources such as academic (e-)books and (e-)journals.

You MAY consider using text/image generators to:

  • Get basic information on a topic. Keep in mind that chatbots may not be trained on recent material, so you may not be able to find information on a topic from the past 1-3 years. However, if you're looking for a simple overview of a well-known or historical subject, chatbots often provide serviceable results.
  • Brainstorm or generate ideas. If using generative AI for class, check with your instructor first to make sure this is allowed. You might consider asking a chatbot for help coming up with a topic for an assignment or even use a chatbot as a sounding board for your own ideas. Chatbots can also provide examples of creative writing and image generators can offer visual inspiration for your ideas.
  • Improve your writing skills. Again, if using generative AI for class, check with your instructor first to make sure this is allowed. Chatbots can be used to refine/edit your writing, help you understand different writing styles (such as formal, informal, collegial, etc.), and generate outlines or templates.
