Description

This exhibit, a collaboration between Wanderground Lesbian Archive/ Library and Fleet Library’s Archives and Special Collections, showcases materials from Wanderground’s collections in conversation with LGBTQ+-related items from Fleet Library’s collections. Guest curator Mev Miller planned this exhibit as part of a year-long project to explore Lesbian artistic expressions and cultural herstorical artifacts as a way to learn and understand more about our communities and experiences.

Exhibit Cases

Diane DiMassa: Hothead Paisan and Giant Ass Publishing

  • T-Shirt: Giant Ass Publishing. Promotes the publishing company, back says “Crack a Smile” (1991)
  • Candy Bar Box. Diane's drawings were featured on a line of chocolate bars, sold in cigar boxes. Each flavor featured a different flavor/name and each box had different art.
  • Comic book series: Hothead Paisan: Homicidal Lesbian Terrorist. Twenty issues were published by Giant Ass from 1991-1995.
  • Button: Used to promote the comic book series.
  • Irreverent Holiday Card.
  • Chicken Rules. Chicken, Diane’s cat featured throughout the comic strip, has her own book.

Alison Bechdel: Before There Was Fun Home...

  • ABC: The Amazon Bedside Companion – a handstitched limited run alphabet book created by Alison Bechdel. This copy is #89 of 100.
  • The Essential Dykes to Watch Out For. The Essential Dykes to Watch Out For gathers a rich and funny compendium of comic strips from all eleven Dykes volumes originally published by Firebrand Books (1986-2000). This full collection published in 2008.
  • Dyke to Watch Out For. A button that uses original lettering from Dykes to Watch Out For books.
  • Found Goddesses. (New Victoria Pub., 1988), Cover art.
  • T-Shirt featuring the Dykes to Watch Out For regular characters.
  • The Lesbian Connection (LC). A Dykes to Watch Out For Comic Strip appears in LC bimonthly publications.

Actions included procession, demonstration, and civil disobedience. “Militarism, violence against women, corporate exploitation, and inherent racism and sexism in military/government/corporate institutions do not represent women’s/Lesbian interests.  And we protest NOT IN OUT NAME!”
  • Emergency Order Curfew. New Haven, CT posted May 1, 1986. From Press Release: “Male violence against women and children increases at an alarming rate each year....[As a result], no woman or child can walk alone at night without fear of violence....Womyn Fighting Insults and Sexual Terrorism (Womyn F.I.S.T) has declared an emergency curfew on all men over the age of 12 between the hours of 8pm-7am.”
  • Poison Ivy. Wood sign posted as a warning in camping area at NEWMR (New England Women’s Music Retreat) during the 1980s.
  • Amazon Bookstore. 20th Anniversary celebration poster drawn by Alison Bechdel. Dykes to Watch Out For Comic Strip portrayed Madwimmin Books, loosely modeled on Amazon Feminist Bookstore (NOT dot.com) in Minneapolis, MN.

  •  T-Shirt. Rainbow Dancing Women. Created in 1990. Signed simply as Carpenter.
  • Tarot Deck & Bag. Daughters of the Moon Tarot Deck. Original version in black and white. Ffiona Morgan. 1985. Vulva Bag. Made by Liz Seaborn, early 1980s. Pieces of worn women’s clothing were used to make the bag.
  • Lesbian Inciter: The Lesbian Newspaper For and By Lesbians, Transitional Issue, December 1985 (cover artist unknown).
  • Poster: Lesbian Insider, Insighter, Inciter. Began publication in 1980 in Minneapolis, MN with this title. Transitioned to the Lesbian Inciter in Dec. 1985.

Olivia Records: Before They Were a Vacation Cruise Line... 

Founded in 1973 by a Lesbian collective, Olivia records produced 40 albums over 20 years and sold more that two million records. During the 1990s, several competing factors affected their long-term viability and contributed to their decline.  In 1990, they stopped producing albums and converted to a travel/cruise  company (music festivals on the high seas!). They remain the only company in the world offering cruises catering just to Lesbians.

  • Album: Lesbian Concentrate (A Lesbian Anthology 100% Undiluted, 1977). Cover art Maria Florio Design Studios.
  • This compilation of music and spoken word by Lesbian artists was released in 1977. Why THIS cover ?? This OUT Lesbian album responded to Anita Bryant's anti-gay crusade “Save Our Children.” At the time, Anita Bryant was a singer and brand ambassador for Florida Citrus Commission. She was featured in many TV commercials singing a catchy tune about orange juice.

Spinsters Opposed to Nuclear Genocide (SONG), New Haven, CT  

In the 1980s, SONG, an activist group of Lesbians and feminist women, protested against various forms of oppression through demonstrations, civil disobedience, and other creative actions.
