A NOTE ON SUBJECT HEADINGS

Libraries organize and classify books under subject headings. Sometimes these subject headings are simple: for example, Architecture or Cooking. When it comes to changing areas of study, especially ones with shifting vocabularies, it gets a bit more complicated. Over the last few decades, librarians have worked to change this system from the inside, advocating for updates to antiquated and offensive subject headings. As one example, the "illegal alien" subject heading was recently changed to "undocumented immigrant."

These links will take you to some major subject headings related to this course, but please keep in mind that they are in flux and imperfect. If you're looking for further reading on issues in library classification, start here.
