When you think about information, what shape does it take? Books? Newspapers? Graphs? What else?

This guide is designed for you, students in RISD S101 courses, as a tool to help you navigate the information landscape you will encounter in this class. There are so many different forms of information out there, and it is packaged in so many different ways. Orienting you to those different forms and building your information literacy skills are the aims of this guide.

How to use this

• If it's your first time here, explore this guide in order using the Previous / Next buttons at the bottom of each page.
• Afterwards, you can revisit individual pages anytime to refresh your memory.
• This guide is built to be accessible for VoiceOver and screen readers. It will work on your phone or tablet (though the images may be a bit squashed).

How to access library resources

• In person:
  • If you are on campus, we'd love to have you visit the Fleet Library in person. 
  • While visiting, you can read zines and magazines, explore the stacks, and of course, check out books!
  • Visit the library website to use our catalog and learn more about us. 
• Online: 
  • The library provides tons of online resources like streaming films, ebooks, and article databases.
  • From the RISD campus, access should be automatic. Yay! If you are off campus, you will need to log into your account or use the school VPN. Instructions here.
  • We are working to help remote students as much as possible. If there's something you need, give us a shout! (see below)
