Why to use social media as a source

  • Quoting public figures or announcements
  • Can be useful for illustrating conflict, trends, or conversations happening online

This kind of Twitter post can help you track down interesting sources. However, the best practice is to follow links back to the original source, then cite that, not the Tweet. In this case it leads to to a digitized pamphlet.

This type of thread, in which someone is telling a story or anecdote, would be OK to cite directly if you are looking to show evidence of the conversation.

How to cite social media

  • Chicago style: Author-Date | Notes & Bibliography
  • MLA style
  • APA style (scroll down to the right section)
  • Make sure to explain the context! It's extra important to explain why you are using these sources in academic writing.
